CHAPTER NINETEEN: GHOST

Babe and I follow the nomads deeper into the complex until we reach a crowd of brothers. Everyone is pitching in and either planting flowers, trees and shrubs, or working on the playground. I head over to where Reaper and Flame are putting together a swing set and offer them a hand.

“Where’s Tanya?” Flame asks.

I nod toward the furthest unit. “Caitlin is giving her and Min a tour.”

“I heard what happened.” Reaper says, standing on a ladder in order to hook up a swing. “Is she ok?”

“Yeah. He didn’t get near her. Tanya’s client, a guy named Grant, helped me out.” I glance around the area, looking for Chaos. “Grant id’d the idiot pretending to mess with my bike. He and Chaos were going to talk to him. Have you seen Chaos?”

“He got here about ten minutes ago.” Reaper says, nodding toward the far end of the massive group of bikers. “He’s over there talking to Dante.”

I head in that direction and reach the group at the same time as Babe.

“Did you find him?” Babe asks Chaos, who nods.

“Yeah, he was right where Grant said he’d be. We had a chat.” Chaos says with a grin. “Tucker said some guy approached him and offered him a hundred bucks to draw you out of the building. He was the one who suggested tampering with your bike. He took off when he recognized Grant.”

“Did he get the guy’s name?” Dante asks.

“Gave me a description.” Chaos says before describing the guy. He sounds familiar.

“Sounds like the same guy who tried to come in through the back. Tanya said it was Matt Jameson.” I tell Dante.

Chaos nods. “Tucker called him James. He was high on something, surprised he could remember anything. Tucker said he was walking by when Jameson approached him. So it was more spur of the moment. My guess is that Jameson is watching the clinic, looking for a chance to get to Tanya.”

“Which is why she won’t be going to work alone.” I say.

“Tucker said he’d call if he saw the guy again. Not sure I believe him, but Grant said he’s a coward. He won’t want to piss me off. So he’ll call.” Chaos says. “Oh, and Grant offered to help protect Tanya.” He laughs when I shoot him a disgusted look. “He told me it was because he’s grateful for the help she’s given him.”

“Let me talk with Tanya.” I tell him. “If she’s felt any kind of creepy vibe from him, then no way.”

“I talked with Grant’s boss, a Marty Dillon. He said Grant is a good guy, trustworthy. He’s worked for Marty for five years as a bounty hunter and has never failed.” Chaos says before turning to Dante. “I think we should make an offer on Marty’s business. Babe and I need something to do now that we don’t spend our time collecting on loans. From talking with Marty and Grant, we’d use a lot of the same skills.”

“Really?” Babe asks with some surprise. “I was just telling Ghost and Min that we should look into building a gym, tying it with the dojo.
